Care Fertility (Care) is an international fertility group and the largest provider of IVF services in the UK. In 2020, Care challenged BJSS to improve and accelerate the process of embryo selection during IVF using artificial intelligence (AI). As embryos often look incredibly similar, manual embryo annotation is extremely time-consuming and presents training and quality assurance challenges. Working alongside Care’s embryologists, BJSS data scientists developed a robust deep learning model using Care’s own historic data set of almost 500 million images and two million manually annotated events. In less than eighteen months’ time, BJSS developed, tested and issued a limited release of this embryo assessment service It is now being rolled out across Care’s network of laboratories in the U.K. and Ireland.
